Our Pool Leak Detection Process
We love helping homeowners save money and regain the peace of mind that comes with a water-tight swimming pool, but we also want our customers to know exactly what we’re doing when we step foot on their property! Here’s an overview of our leak detection process so you know how we work, how we locate pool leaks, and what happens next.
Pool Leak Detection: How We Find Swimming Pool Leaks
Our leak detection process has three primary parts: A comprehensive structural exam, a plumbing leak test and an equipment inspection.
While these three leak detection functions are separate and serve their own purpose, they're performed concurrently by our technician. This same process is used on any additional bodies of water including spas, infinity edge basins, or other water features.
Equipment Inspection
This may seem obvious, but many leaks can be missed at your pool equipment while the pump is running. Our technician will observe the pool pump, filter, valves and all above ground equipment as the pump is running.
All leaks will be identified and noted. The system will then be turned off for the rest of the pool leak detection process.
Comprehensive Structural Exam
Our leak detection expert will arrange his work cart and tools around the perimeter of the pool for maximum efficiency.
Before entering the pool, he’ll allow the water to settle and inspect the pool skimmer. Examining the skimmer before we’ve entered the pool tends to be very helpful as the water will be still, allowing for the best examination of the skimmer as possible.
Next he will dive into your pool to continue his inspection of all elements of the pool’s structure.
Our leak pro will use a weight belt, mask, breathing equipment, underwater flashlight, inspection mirror, a dye tester (to administer leak-locating dye in limited amounts directly to suspect areas), and other hand tools as he makes his way around the pool. Every nook, cranny, and hidden corner of your pool’s structure is a possibility for a leak, so naturally every nook, cranny and hidden corner will be accounted for.
Most of this inspection process is fairly straightforward but occasionally, especially when examining a smaller spa, you may catch a glimpse of our tech bending and twisting in some odd Cirque-de-Solesque position to get just the right visual!
He’ll systematically remove any part of the pool preventing a proper visual inspection and dye test, such as a drain cover.
He’ll move throughout the pool getting a proper visual assessment on every element including all jets, drains, and lights. He’ll take his time to inspect the tile line, grout line, and any water feature or spa spillovers.
All leaks will be identified and noted.
Any leaks that could be properly repaired with underwater epoxy will be repaired on-site at no additional charge! The great news is, this is the case for most leaks. For more details on what can and cannot be repaired with epoxy, see our article on underwater epoxy repairs.
This same process is performed on any attached features such as a spa, infinity edge basin or water feature.
Plumbing Leak Test
Over the years we’ve upgraded our process to include the most thorough system for accounting for plumbing leaks possible.
While the pump has been off, we test every plumbing line to see if any are drawing water into the line. This process reveals even the smallest leaks which older methodologies can miss.
If a plumbing leak is suspected, our technician begins his search into the line. The inner seams and joints of the line known to be leaking will be examined. This often requires an inspection mirror, an underwater flashlight, expertise and experience.
If the plumbing leak is further in the line than what can be observed by our leak technician, one of our Plumbing Leak Location Specialists will be scheduled to pinpoint this leak at no additional cost to you!
If a visit from our Plumbing Leak Location Specialist is necessary, he will pressure test the problem plumbing line and using highly specialized plumbing leak locating equipment, pinpoint the leak in the broken plumbing line. Again, this is at no additional cost to you — even if there are multiple plumbing leaks to be located throughout the plumbing system.
All leaks will be identified and noted.
Leak Detection Wrap-Up
Your pool and the surrounding area will be put back together in better condition than when we arrived. Your pump will be returned to its normal automatic schedule unless an underwater epoxy repair requires the pump to be left off overnight.
All leaks will be noted and communicated via a phone call, an emailed report, and an in-person conversation if you are home.
Our report will not only have an exhaustive explanation of all findings, repairs performed and recommendations, but also pictures and videos (including underwater pictures and videos where applicable) showing exactly what our technician found.
If any leaks require a construction repair to be properly resolved, our Repair Coordinator will contact you to answer any questions, explain the process, give you an upfront price and schedule the appointment. If the construction repair is scheduled within 30 days of the leak detection, $200 of the leak detection charge will be deducted from the price of the repair.
