Is your pool level dropping? Discover THE expert method to test for a leak or normal evaporation!

WATCH THE VIDEO

Unlike most household issues, pool leaks can be subtle and sneaky.
If your A/C or plumbing has a problem, you notice it fast, and when it’s fixed right, the results are immediate.

But with pool leaks, it can take days (or even weeks) to be sure the issue is fully resolved.

At Aaron’s Leak Detection, our goal is to eliminate your leak with as little cost and stress as possible. Taking accurate measurements after service is the key to confirming success, for both you and us.

If you suspect your pool is still losing water after a repair, don’t worry just yet. Every leak detection comes with a six-month warranty to give you peace of mind.

Who Is This Video For?

Quick note: If you’re not heating your pool and not running multiple water features, but you're still losing more than 1 inch per day, you can skip ahead. That’s a leak.

Now, for everyone else:

Hi, I’m Jason, the owner of Aaron’s Leak Detection. This video walks you through how to take reliable, accurate water level measurements to help determine if your pool has a leak.

This guide is especially helpful in two scenarios:

  1. You’ve recently had leak detection done – taking measurements ensures the problem is resolved.

  2. You’re unsure if you have a leak – these steps will help you distinguish between a real leak and normal evaporation.

When to Expect Significant Water Loss

Here are three common situations where water loss might still be expected:

  1. Pending Repairs
If we detected a leak and recommended repairs that haven’t been completed yet, your pool will continue to leak. That’s expected.

  1. Overfilled Pools
Most pools aren’t watertight above the tile line. If your water level is too high, it may drain faster than usual. The ideal water level is midway on the skimmer face.

  2. Heaters and Water Features
Heating your pool or running multiple features increases evaporation, especially during Florida’s dry months. Don’t be surprised if you lose more water than expected.

Leak or Evaporation? Here's How to Tell

We'll walk you through a simple 48-hour test to separate leaks from normal evaporation.

You’ll Need:

  • A ruler or our business card (with a ruler printed on the back)

  • A pencil

  • A camera or a phone to take pictures

We leave a measurement card at every detection job, but you can also get one at your local pool store.

The 48-Hour Water Loss Test

Step 1: Minimize Water Features

Turn off all features (except basic spillovers) for the entire test duration.

Step 2: Let the Water Settle

Turn off your pump for a few minutes to let the water become still.

Step 3: Mark the Starting Level

Tape our card to the tile or inside the skimmer. Align the start line with the current water level.
No card? Use a pencil to mark the water level inside the skimmer canister.

Step 4: Take a Picture

Snap a clear, close-up photo of the starting water level.

Step 5: Set a 48-Hour Reminder

Let your pump run on its normal automatic schedule.

Step 6: After 48 Hours

Turn off the pump again briefly and let the water settle.

Step 7: Measure and Document

Use your ruler or our card to measure the difference. Take another photo of the new water level.

Interpreting Your Results

For an unheated pool with minimal features running, you can expect about 1/4 inch per day due to evaporation. That means:

  • Up to 1/2 inch loss over 48 hours = ✅ You're likely leak-free.

  • 1/2 to 3/4 inch loss = 🤔 Borderline. Consider redoing the test to confirm.
Evaporation varies due to temperature, wind, and humidity in Central Florida.

  • More than 3/4 inch loss = 🚨 Leak detected. Contact us ASAP.

When in doubt, re-run the test.
