Pool Noodle Fun

Pool Noodles are surprisingly fun all on their own.  They are unexpectedly buoyant and perfect for for sword fights.  But with a little creativity they can be so, so much more!

Pool Noodle Life Hacks

It's that time of year again - pool noodle season!  The deceptively simple foam tubes can be found in just about any store and they can do so much more than keep you afloat!  This month we'll be bringing you suggestions both surprising and fun for new ways to make the noodle work for you!

We're kicking it off with some truly ingenious life hacks!  Check these out...

Sun Screen - Spray or Cream?

In recent years, the cream-vs-spray debate has surfaced every summer, creating confusion for parents who are just trying to get their squirming kids protected the best they can.  So what IS the right answer?

It's complicated.

Creams may be safer, but most of us don't use enough to get the advertised protection.  We are also less likely to reapply creams as often as we should.  Sprays are more convenient and therefore more likely to be applied, but dermatologists have concerns over their safety, and again we're likely not using enough to get the proper protection.

From a practical standpoint, the best sunscreen is the one you'll use.  Whichever one you go with, make sure you apply it early and often and take care to follow the application instructions to achieve the recommended coverage.

Swim Safe

With the return of warm weather, the cool of the swimming pool beckons.  And no one hears that call sooner or with more enthusiasm than the kids!  It's never to early to think about swim lessons and the benefits they provide for all young swimmers - from infants to teens.  Infants as young as six-months old can learn water survival skills, young children can learn to float and swim, and older children can begin to master different strokes and build speed and endurance.  Check with your favorite swim instructor to set up lessons, or check out Thumbtack for a list of qualified instructors in your area.

Get Ready to Swim

Winter is over (whew, that was a rough two weeks!) and the temperatures are already creeping back up into the 80's which means it's almost swim season again!  If your house is like mine, the kids have already taken the plunge!  And, if your house is like mine, you may have been a little lax with the pool maintenance over the winter.  Here are a few steps for getting everything back in order.

  1. If your pool is not screened in, you may have some debris accumulated on the bottom of the pool.  Put your skimmer and vacuum to work!
  2. Check your water level and add or remove until the top of the water sits at the midway point of your skimmer.
  3. Analyze your pool water with an at-home kit or by taking a sample down to your local pool store.  Take recommended steps to return your water to optimum swimming levels.
  4. Check your deck drains and clear out any weeds or debris that have accumulated over the winter.
  5. Inspect your pool toys for damage or mildew and discard those that aren't up for another season.
  6. Dive in!
