When Lightning Strikes

The kids are splashing merrily in the pool. You are supervising nearby with a cold beverage in hand, when the ominous sound rumbles overhead. Everyone stops and looks at you, hoping maybe you didn’t hear. Or that it was just a plane. But it’s definitely thunder and you issue the dreaded command, “Everyone out of the pool.” The kids groan and complain as they clamber out. It seems so silly. It’s not even raining yet! Why can’t they swim just a little longer? Is lightning really such a threat?

In case you are ever tempted to give in to the pleas, the true answer is that YES, lightning is absolutely a threat. Direct strikes on in ground pools are rare because there are so many taller targets surrounding the pool, but they do happen. Even a nearby strike can be dangerous if the current is channeled into the water through the pool’s plumbing system. Lightning can travel up to ten miles ahead of or behind the main body of the storm, so the lack of rain is not an indication that you can swim a little longer. If you can hear the thunder, don’t be in the pool. If the kids still don’t believe you, here’s a video clip you can offer up as proof that your pool really can be hit by lightning!
